bring creativity closer with

tech law pro

Hi, I'm T.H., a modern, world-class trained tech lawyer on a mission to bring creativity closer. I love advancing this mission by partnering with creative tech builders to get ahead of changes in privacy, cybersecurity, trust & safety, IP, and the use of technology to improve business performance. These days, while exploring where to contribute next, I'm advising ex-bigtech colleagues on their stealth startups.I've previously managed data issues for global tech startups and bigtech companies that serve millions to billions of people and businesses, after starting my career learning from more seasoned lawyers in private practice. I received my legal education at UC Berkeley following a bachelors from Wellesley College where I took cross-registered classes at MIT.Please scroll for career highlights and reach out if I can help.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

From my 14+ yr. legal career, with 10+ yrs. of in-house counseling for leading private and public consumer tech companies

1. Stack Overflow genAI

Over 100 million developers use Stack Overflow, a genAI knowledge-sharing platform where users answer general technology questions in public and employer-specific questions in private. Stack Overflow develops its own foundational LLM model, making it (along with other top AI startups Perplexity AI, Cohere AI, etc.) one of the few non-bigtech companies to do so. I’m proud that during my 5 months as their Senior Counsel on the product & privacy legal team, I helped launch novel features to prove demand for their premium, genAI-powered tech, generating buzz that led to signed AI deals with Google and OpenAI.

2. Meta / Facebook Data Platform

As Lead Counsel on the product & privacy legal team, I helped Meta avoid incurring $50M+ privacy regulatory fines, use AI/ML to recover $10B in lost revenue, and develop a compliance program for managing data/content in the metaverse, with all the conflicting issues around privacy, security/trust & safety, free speech, and IP rights. This was during an unusually stressful time when Meta was under two active regulatory orders and intense public scrutiny that made balancing the competing needs of regulatory compliance, product safety, and growth especially challenging.

3. Xbox Platform

As an Attorney on the product legal team counseling on high-stakes privacy and IP issues, I helped Microsoft's Xbox business advance gaming with sharing features for the launch of GamePass (a gaming library subscription allowing for playing with family & friends), compliantly integrate IP and data including of child users with Xbox’s $2.5B acquisition of Minecraft, implement a GDPR compliance plan before the enforcement deadline, and refine its B2B data sharing policies with its enterprise cloud gaming customers.

ahead of legal trends

2012 CIPP/US Privacy Certified

Achieved IAPP's CIPP/US privacy certification in 2012 when privacy was an emerging legal practice, 6 years before EU GDPR came into enforcement. Used privacy knowledge to consult banks, Foursquare, pre-IPO Meta, pre-IPO LinkedIn, pre-IPO Uber, and other tech companies (e.g., updated Meta's and LinkedIn's privacy policies, advised on privacy for launch of Meta's Spotify integration feature enabling auto-posting of Spotify activity on Facebook Timelines, advised and supported Amex to implement privacy mitigations for pay-by-tweet integration with Twitter and gameplay Achievements rewards unlock integration with Xbox).
